Day One Wrap - Wednesday 7th April 2010
Glorious baking hot sunshine bathed the picturesque new Horseshoe Point Cricket Ground today as Thailand’s newest sixes tournament, the Pattaya International Cricket Sixes got underway.
Sixteen teams are battling for honours at this Asian Cricket Sixes Tour event, being hosted at Pattaya Cricket Club’s new home ground.
It was an action-packed day too with the Cricket Next Academy from India setting out their stall for the championship as they posted three good wins in Round One of the competition. First they defeated the Asian All Stars, also from India, by 30 runs after amassing a challenging total of 87 for 1 wicket from their 5 allotted overs.
Nirmal Harsha scored 34 not out and took 1 wicket for 10 runs in his bowling spell for the Academy. Next victims were the Warathais from New South Wales who lost the close match by just 3 runs, the Academy having made 73 in their innings.
Socrates of the Warathais scored 29 runs against the talented youngsters in a losing cause. Their final challengers of the day were the gallant, mixed team, the Custom Cockatoos from Adelaide who made a great fight of trying to reach the Academy total of 91, but in the end fell 26 runs short.
The adjudicators panel met at the conclusion of the matches today to award a number of prizes for individual performances during Day One of the tournament. Cyrus Maybud of the Perth Postels was adjudged the ACST Player of the Day for his excellent all round contribution, especially with the bat.
The Outback Batsman of the Day was awarded to Jignesh of the Cricket Next Academy and the Outback Best Bowler award went to Nic Nic of the Custom Cockatoos.
Eight teams played today in the first half of the Round One fixtures which will be completed by the end of play tomorrow when the streaming of teams into round Two will take place. The action continues tomorrow with matches commencing at 9.15am with the Pattaya CC Colts taking on the Thai Spirits in an all Thai affair.

More glorious weather graced Horseshoe Point Resort Cricket Ground as the tournament plot thickened following action and results on the field, and the positions going into Round Two were determined.
Some excellent cricket and massive hitting was applauded throughout the day as the eight teams comprising the second half of the draw completed their three first round matches today.
Dhaka Cricket Club from Bangladesh emerged as the pick of the competitive teams on Day Two of this first Pattaya International Cricket Sixes. They enjoyed three comfortable wins over the Thai Spirits, the Bounty Buccaneers from Malaysia, and one of the local favourites the Pattaya Colts. Rubayat, Topash and Hasan were the pick of the Dhaka CC players.
Also hailing from Bangladesh, Narayangang CC impressed too as they triumphed over Ios Malakas, the Bangkok Stars and the Pattaya Stallions, thereby securing their place in the Cup competition.
Match of the day was the clash between the Thai Spirits and Dhaka CC. Batting first the Spirits put a modest 66/2 on the board, Titash retiring on 30 runs, and then proceeded to defend the total tenaciously in an excellent bowling and fielding display.
Dhaka narrowly won the match by reaching their target with one ball to spare after losing 4 wickets, Zia and Hansie being the pick of the Thai Spirits bowlers with 2 victims each.
The top eight placed teams following Round One enter the Cup competition with the next eight ranked sides battling for places in Plate and Shield divisions. Three of the teams earning a berth to compete in the Cup are from Thailand: Thai Spirits, Pattaya Stallions and the Ali Baba Warriors.
Players of the Day for Day Two were selected at the close of play by the tournament panel. Topash of Dhaka CC was the 'Outback Best Bowler', Wally ‘Whale’ Pohl of Ios Malakas won the 'Outback Best Batsman' award and 'ACST Player of the Day' was Roger Lindo of the Bangkok Stars.
Day Three of the Pattaya International Cricket Sixes will get off to a cracking start at 10am Thursday with juicy match ups between the Warathais from New South Wales versus the CBB Postels and the Perth Postels versus the Custom Cockatoos. The four day tournament concludes Saturday.
